Knowing the Rules of the Game addresses our young
people’s concerns about education and employment, and
some of the obstacles they may encounter as they attempt
to identify their purpose and pursue their vision. This must-read,
biographical guidebook details the realistic struggles that
the author, Conrad Prophet, encountered in the pursuit of
job fulfillment, while maintaining his integrity and not
compromising his beliefs. Mr. Prophet shares personal experiences
and offers enlightenment and encouragement, while striving
to help our young men and women identify and unleash their
potential.
Knowing the Rules of the Game provides a candid
and provocative perspective of the oppositional and, sometimes
brutal, mainstream workforce. It is an effective tool that
can be used to educate and empower our young people as they
make the transition into adulthood and prepare themselves
for experiences in the “real world.”
This is a “must-read” for all high school and
college students.

“Knowing the Rules of the Game”
Brother Prophet has embraced the challenging task of searching one’s self for the sole purpose of helping someone else, in this case many others. His ability to articulate his experiences is both refreshing and honest. As a Superintendent of Schools I will encourage Instructional Leaders throughout the district to consider this work not only for the library, but as a reading resource for the High School students of the district.
As an educator I have an appreciation for the authors’ commitment to sharing the pros and cons of his educational and professional journey. Now, more than ever, we must be willing to share the truth of our individual and collective history which includes struggles, challenges and blessings. “Knowing The Rules Of The Game” is a positive work which I firmly believe will serve to prepare the youth of this age with a solid testimony to the challenges one encounters along their journey through this life.
The American way of life encourages struggle, perseverance and the embracing of personal tribulations as a rite of passage. If this statement is true; educators, parents and leaders must prepare students for the journey that awaits them all. Prophet’s work is an awesome resource to that end.
As a native of Saginaw Michigan, I read the chilling truths with the same degree of ambivalence I felt when reading “Beyond Ontological Blackness” because sometimes the truth hurts. Nonetheless, we stand to gain more from the truth than the perpetuation of myths.
Write on, Brother Prophet, Write on!

"Prophet's Knowing the Rules of the Game embarks
the reader upon one tenacious man's challenging journey to
find acceptance, fulfillment and integrity within a workforce
dominated by the majority culture.
"In this biographical advisory handbook, young people from
various home environments, socio-economic and educational
backgrounds, will garner a front row seat to the often brutal,
ever prevalent discriminatory practices they will face as
they pursue their goals in higher education, volunteer for
the armed forces and/or seek a myriad of employment opportunities.
"In the vein of the late Malcolm X and contemporary visionaries
Nathan McCall and Cornell West, Prophet poignantly reminds
us of one prevalent recurring theme. Race still and always
will matter in all aspects of life in our collective American
consciousness. Subsequently, today’s African American
youth must fully determine the level of assimilation and
compliance they are willing to surrender in order to win
the grand prize: ascension on the proverbial ladder of success."
