From Chapter 3
To be successful in whatever career you select, it will
take effort, determination, and preparation. On the flip
side, if you do not choose a career and pursue it passionately,
you will end up with just a job. If you only remember one
thing from this chapter, please remember this; If you do
not live your own dream, you will live someone else's dream.
From Chapter 4
Interacting with the White managers at UPS certainly prepared
me for my future, as I was able to realize my true identity.
You never know how you will handle the fire until you have
experienced it. My experiences gave me an introduction to
a different mindset of what people will do to be successful
and maintain a certain standard of living. By observing others,
it also allowed me to determine what principles, morals,
standards, and beliefs I was going to live by, to be successful
and maintain a certain standard of living. The sooner in
life you determine what you will stand for, the sooner you
will arrive at your true calling.
From Chapter 5
Excerpt 1
For my young brothers and sisters who have not encountered
racism because you are still in high school and college,
I would like to forewarn you. If you want to be successful
in corporate America, please do the opposite of what you
are about to read. For my other brothers and sisters who
have already gone through the battles I am about to describe
and who are still going through them, please keep your head
up and continue to fight. Rest assured that you are not fighting
alone.
Excerpt 2
For those of you who really want to succeed in White corporate
America, I suggest that you assimilate as quickly as possible.
If you do not know what that means, just refer to the quote
from Paul Robeson that I provided earlier in this chapter.
Also, look at a number of financially successful Black people
in America who have been accepted by the White power structure.
If you emulate them, your chances of surviving in White corporate
America will be greater.
From Chapter 10
At an early age, everyone should be able to determine if
they possess the qualities of a leader or a follower. I have
always considered myself a leader and independent thinker.
Of course, as a child, I had to repress my natural instinct
to be an independent thinker and learn how to follow instructions
and receive direction. Although I did not follow directions
very well, I did work at disciplining myself. Before you
can become an effective leader, you have to be a disciplined
follower.
From Chapter 11
I have emphasized what knowledge is and how to obtain it
throughout this chapter but it doesn’t stop there.
Parents should raise their children to be leaders and not
followers. For any parent to raise a child and not teach
that child how to obtain knowledge so the child can have
a successful life is a travesty!
From Chapter 12
Excerpt 1
All of the hard earned money you convinced your parent(s)
to spend or the money you earned while slaving at your minimum
wage job during high school was wasted on clothes, gym shoes,
electronic devices, and "Bling Bling.” That money
could have been saved for the following: College; Trade school;
Car; First Home; Starting your own business; Or invested
in stocks and bonds, like your White and Asian peers do with
their money.
Excerpt 2
Allow me to tell you a secret. While you are playing Nintendo,
Xbox, and Playstation for three to five consecutive hours
after school, and from sun up to sun down on Saturdays and
Sundays, your White and Asian peers are learning how to create
the game cartridges to get your money. All the valuable time
that you waste playing those games should be spent preparing
for your future, instead of eroding your brain.
Excerpt 3
Now that you know some of the rules of the game, only you
can decide your next move. Are you just going to be complacent,
apathetic, and try to live a quiet life and allow other people
to control your destiny? Or are you going to be dedicated
to learning knowledge so you can become successful and a
make a positive difference in other young people's lives?
